Our definition of spirituality is the use of energy for health, happiness, and overall well-being. In the Star of Light’s One Love perspective, we support life as a high expression of consciousness. From this viewpoint, when we eat meat or fish, we are consuming what was once a living being. In contrast, plant life is closer to the original source of energy in the food chain.
The Foundation of the Food Chain
Animals in the ocean consume phytoplankton, and cattle consume grass. In that sense, plant life is the foundation of the food system. When you eat a vegan diet, especially one rich in salads and raw foods, you are taking in energy more directly from that source. When you consume meat, you are eating a secondary form of that energy, processed through another living organism. From our perspective, a plant-based diet can increase personal energy and, from a consciousness standpoint, supports the preservation of animal life.
A Personal Journey Toward Plant-Based Living
I have lived both as a vegan and as a meat eater over the past ten years. Due to rising cholesterol levels, I have once again chosen a vegan lifestyle. Studies suggest that this approach may reduce cholesterol by up to 30%, depending on the individual. Research also indicates that vegan diets are often associated with improved cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and a reduced risk of diabetes. At the same time, it is important for some people to consider supplementing with vitamin B12 and certain minerals when following a plant-based diet.
How Culture and Business Shape What We Eat
From my experience, exercise pairs more naturally with a vegan lifestyle. During my years of eating meat, I enjoyed foods like ribs, chicken, pork, and lamb. I even remember eating an entire chicken in one sitting at times. It likely began in my youth with inexpensive fast-food deals, such as Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1960s. It tasted good, but at the time I was influenced by advertising, convenience, and cultural norms. As I’ve grown older, I’ve become more aware that business interests do not always prioritize health. In many ways, it becomes a “buyer beware” situation.
As people age, diet often changes due to health, stress, lifestyle, and social environments. Business meals, for example, can influence food choices, often leading to expensive meals such as red meat, lobster, or desserts, especially when they are expensed for work. However, many of these foods, particularly those high in sugar, fat, and processed oils, can have negative health effects over time. Restaurant meals also tend to be rich in oils, fats, and refined ingredients.
The Abundance of a Vegan Diet
As a vegan, I have found that my diet has become more diverse and interesting. I tend to explore different types of restaurants that offer plant-based options, including Ethiopian, Mexican, Indian, and Mediterranean cuisines. This variety has made eating more enjoyable rather than limiting. I also incorporate green drinks, smoothies, nut butters on rice cakes, spirulina, and blueberries. In reality, very little feels like a sacrifice, and in many ways, the variety increases.
Occasionally, at social events, someone may choose to eat dairy or fish, and in moderation that is part of real life. The key is awareness and balance.
What the Research Says
Some research suggests that vegans may have lower risks of certain health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer, along with a lower environmental impact due to reduced land and resource use compared to livestock production. These findings are part of an ongoing global discussion about diet, health, and sustainability.
Food, Energy, and the Path Forward
These are some reflections on food and spirituality. In our work, we explore how different foods relate to energy and well-being, and we share this information in our books and materials. There are many resources available for those interested in exploring plant-based living, from recipes to nutritional guidance.
Ultimately, the goal is not strict rules, but awareness, choosing what supports your health, your energy, and your sense of connection to life. Much love in your journey of exploration.
