I received a lot of feedback after writing a blog several posts ago about being present through the five physical senses and becoming aware of what is happening around you. Many people pointed out that there are two additional senses worth considering beyond hearing, smell, touch, taste, and sight: intuition and love.
Intuition as a Sixth Sense
After reflecting on this, I agreed that for some people, intuition can provide another layer of awareness. Through intuition, it may be possible to sense energy, perceive an aura, or become aware of stored life experiences that reveal additional aspects of the present moment. In this sense, intuition acts as a sixth sense, something beyond the physical senses that connects us to subtle or intangible qualities of energy.
Intuition connects you to another person’s energy. You might describe it as a gut feeling, your soul offering guidance, or your higher self observing something that cannot be detected through the physical senses alone. It may be the energy present in a gathering, the atmosphere of a place, or something you have learned through life experience. Most people recognize it when it happens. Someone says or does something, and it affects you in a particular way. It is not solely related to one of your five physical senses. Instead, it feels more innate and primitive, a natural way your body stores and responds to the energy of experience.
Love as the Energy of Connection
The other sense is love. This concept is somewhat more complex because it often overlaps with intuition. In the Star of Light, love is the energy that enables consciousness and spirit to function. It arises from your connection to God through your core Star of Light, located near the belly button. Love is harmony with nature and alignment with a natural process.
Many people express love in the way they communicate. They may demonstrate compassion, understanding, forgiveness, or kindness. Part of this is conveyed through words, but much of it comes through their vibration—the way they act, speak, and carry themselves. It is reflected in their tone of voice, body language, and overall presence. Your senses perceive these qualities and provide additional information that helps you become more present. It creates a feeling that goes beyond the spoken message.
Often, this quality appears in a person’s attitude toward life or in the way they view the world. You may notice a certain demeanor when speaking with someone. It can be reflected in their voice, their choice of words, or the energy behind their message. For example, someone discussing war may reveal deeper feelings about violence and compassion through the way they speak. A surfer might naturally talk about freedom, the ocean, and the joy of riding waves, expressing those ideas with a unique energy and enthusiasm. It is easy to sense. In many ways, it feels like an emotional or spiritual layer beneath their words.
This quality can be implied rather than directly stated. While it may sometimes be confused with intuition, it is distinct. It is communicated through the manner in which words are spoken and the energy behind them. Both intuition and love provide additional information that can deepen your awareness and help you become more present.
Being Present in the Harmony of Nature
This awareness is not limited to social interactions. It can also occur when experiencing nature. For example, when I visit a beautiful location and observe things in harmony with nature, I experience a deep sense of appreciation. The other day, I saw a river flowing into the ocean, surrounded by palm trees, with small fish swimming in the clear water. I sensed that I was witnessing energy in a perfectly arranged state. It seemed to carry a meaning greater than the sum of its individual parts.
In that moment, my spirit came alive. What I experienced was more than a visual scene. It was a feeling of connection, harmony, and presence that touched something deeper within me.
