One Love – Purpose

As you get older, it becomes increasingly important to have a sense of purpose. When you are young, purpose often comes naturally, you may focus on finding a partner, building financial security, and raising a family. These activities provide direction and meaning. But once your career is complete and your children have grown, it becomes important to find something new to engage in each day.

This purpose can be simple or complex, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that each day, you look forward to doing it. It might be playing music, caring for your spouse, or practicing habits that support your health. For many older adults, travel can become more difficult, even though it remains enjoyable.

Finding Perspective in Your Later Years

By the time you reach your later years, around 80, for example, you often have a clearer perspective on life and a better understanding of how important things like nutrition are. You have developed a sense of identity and shared it with others, whether it reflects your true self or a role shaped by your career. These roles take time and help fulfill a sense of purpose. A good example is a singer who continues to perform, making that their ongoing passion.

Your chosen activities help fuel both your body and mind. Even something as simple as eating certain foods each day, like two eggs or a bowl of oatmeal, can become part of a meaningful routine. Taking care of yourself in this way is, in itself, a spiritual act. That is what One Love is about. It is not about doing things that are not meaningful to you. It is about relaxing, breathing, and helping your body function as well as it can at any age.

This can be especially challenging as you grow older, particularly if you are dealing with illness. However, doing even a small amount each day can make a meaningful difference.

The Power of Prayer, Proverbs, and Simple Acts

For example, saying a simple prayer of gratitude or repeating a positive affirmation can be a powerful mental practice. We share these on our website because they help many people gain insight into their lives. I personally appreciate prayers of gratitude, focusing on what has already been given, rather than asking for more. A thoughtful prayer can bring clarity, focus, and motivation.

We also value proverbs because they offer insight into life. One of my clients performs a daily act of kindness. Think about that, doing something each day to help someone else. It could be as simple as making a phone call or visiting someone. It doesn’t need to be complicated, just meaningful. For many people, working in the garden, pulling weeds, or pruning plants is enough. The key is simply to do something.

The Role of Ritual in Daily Life

What we are really talking about is ritual, doing something consistently that has meaning for you. It might be as simple as having a cup of coffee in the morning while watching the news. The important part is that you look forward to it and that it adds meaning to your day.

Personally, I like to do some form of exercise each day, such as walking or light weight training. It doesn’t have to be intense, just enough to get the body moving. That, in itself, is a form of purpose. I follow a short routine before I shower each morning that includes arm rotations, push-ups, and light resistance exercises, sometimes using something as simple as a t-shirt for resistance. It helps me feel energized and alive.

On nice days, we take our kayaks out for a short paddle. It’s a wonderful way to change the environment and reconnect with a sense of vitality.

So take a moment to think about what gives your life meaning, and start doing it today. You will never regret it.
