Many people search for spirituality through meditation, breathing exercises, or yoga classes. In my opinion, spirituality is discovered through simplicity. It’s one thing to manage a dozen projects at work while chasing money and success. But spirituality asks something different of us. It asks us to simply be present and observe ourselves interacting with the world around us.
For 55 years, I ran many businesses and managed hundreds of employees. Much of that time was filled with stress and worry, especially wondering how I would make payroll. Today, I sit watching the sunrise over Hanalei Bay as the waves roll onto the shore.
The birds chirp as the sun rises and the sky fills with color. Do I miss the endless emails and business tasks that once consumed my days? Not at all.
Finding Spirituality in an Ordinary Morning
In Hanalei, I often stop for coffee or breakfast and simply watch people moving through town. It’s a beach community, and many younger people proudly show off their tans and athletic bodies. I enjoy watching the surfers walk by with their sun-bleached hair. Many of the young women wear tattoos now, something far more common than years ago. On the beach, very little seems hidden anymore.
An hour or two passes, and nothing important has been “accomplished” except feeling refreshed and alive. Mountains rise in the distance, and this place could easily be replaced by any beautiful setting where nature complements your morning routine.
It’s all very simple.
There’s nothing to do except be present. Observe the people around you. Notice the beauty of the plants, always blooming in the warm air. Chickens gather at my feet, waiting for crumbs from visitors passing by.
What Do You Really Want From Life?
The real question is this: What do you want from life?
Power? Fame? Recognition? Or simply happiness?
You can see every possible answer reflected in the faces of the people walking through town. Some look intense and burdened. Others carry expressions of freedom and joy. Hanalei is only a few blocks from the ocean, yet it feels like another world. Sometimes I buy a smoothie made from fresh island fruit or stop at the bakery for warm bread. Aside from the cost of food, everything else is free. Nature provides the beauty, and humanity provides the entertainment.
Spirituality Is Understanding Yourself
To me, this is spirituality.
It’s the use of energy for health, happiness, and well-being. It has little to do with organized religion. Instead, it has everything to do with understanding yourself and recognizing what truly brings you peace. People can talk endlessly about auras, energy flow, or mitochondria, but deep inside, you already know what your heart needs. Trust it. Follow it. It rarely leads you in the wrong direction.
The Magic of Everyday Connection
The other day, I was walking to my car holding my wife’s hand when a stranger stopped us and asked how long we had been married. I was surprised by the question. When I told him 35 years, he smiled warmly. He said it reminded him of his parents walking together in Venezuela. Then he placed his hand on his heart.
That simple moment touched me deeply.
People often create the magic that turns ordinary moments into spiritual ones. Sometimes spirituality is nothing more than love, connection, and presence in everyday life.
Now it’s time to pick up my guitar and play a few songs.
Let a simple life awaken your spiritual spirit.
