In yesterday’s blog, we wrote about a full moon ritual to honor an important celestial presence. However, there is another ritual that everyone practices, often without realizing it: the ritual of eating breakfast.
There are two approaches. One is a quick cup of coffee, something sweet, and a rush off to the news, the internet, or work. The other is to appreciate what breakfast truly does for you. When you eat breakfast, you break your overnight fast and signal to your body the kind of life you want to live. It fuels your body and brain, activates your metabolism, and supports mental focus. What you eat matters. It affects your weight, your energy, and your long-term health.
A Reader’s Morning Ritual: The Scrub Breakfast
One follower recently shared her daily breakfast, which she calls the “scrub breakfast.” Here is what it includes:
- 2 tablespoons freshly ground flax seeds
- 1 tablespoon freshly ground chia seeds
- 2 cocoa beans, ground with the seeds
- 2 tablespoons hemp seeds, lightly ground
- 2 tablespoons goji berries
- 1/4 cup oatmeal
- 1/2 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
- 4–6 walnuts
She mixes everything in a bowl, adds boiling water just to moisten it, then adds almond milk, soy milk, or another milk of choice to reach the desired consistency. She finishes it with a teaspoon of olive oil drizzled on top. I wish her well with it.
What You Eat Is an Act of Self-Love
I’m not specifically recommending this recipe, though it appears designed to support heart health and cholesterol balance. What matters most is that she approaches breakfast with intention and respect for her body. Personally, I prefer something simpler. I often eat two eggs with vegetables or smoked turkey. It is quick, nourishing, and sustaining. On other days, I enjoy sprouted organic oatmeal with blueberries, hemp hearts, and Ceylon cinnamon. I follow that with a few walnuts for brain health, and I feel ready to begin the day.
The central idea is simple: eat something beneficial that supports your body. As I write this, I am sipping chamomile tea to create calm and focus. Even this is part of a ritual, one that truly matters. Self-care and self-love begin with how we nourish our energy each day.
The Benefits of a Mindful Morning Meal
There are a few helpful principles to keep in mind. Limit sugar whenever possible. Many highly advertised breakfast foods are loaded with sugar and offer little nutritional value. A balanced breakfast can provide many benefits:
- It boosts metabolism and provides energy, especially when eaten within two hours of waking.
- It improves concentration, memory, and overall mental performance.
- It supports healthy weight management by stabilizing hunger and reducing cravings.
- It contributes to long-term health by lowering risks associated with metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
- It provides essential nutrients early in the day.
For a healthy breakfast, especially for children, include protein, healthy fats, and fiber. These nutrients help prevent blood sugar spikes and keep you full longer.
Good choices include eggs, oatmeal, fruit, Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and whole-grain toast. Foods to limit include sugary cereals, pastries, and refined carbohydrates that lead to energy crashes.
Breakfast as a Conscious Awakening
Why put this level of care into breakfast each day? Because breakfast can be a meaningful ritual. Add music, take your time, and treat it as a daily act of renewal. It is a key part of a healthy lifestyle and an expression of self-love, using your energy wisely to support the day ahead.
Breakfast sustains my energy, even now in my late seventies. I did not think much about it when I was younger, but with age and awareness comes intention. Preparing and eating breakfast with care is what I call a conscious awakening.
