Spirituality is the most searched topic on One Love, so I decided to write about it a little more. Spirituality begins with a mindset. You have to want to work with your energy, whether it is mental, emotional, or physical. This is the foundation of spirituality.
Energy Is the Heart of Spiritual Growth
When you improve your energy, you become more spiritual. This can happen through exercise, sleep, vacations, healthy food, or prayer. There is no way around it. You may believe in Jesus, Moses, or Mohammed, but you should also consider how your beliefs affect your energy. Our goal is to help you maximize your energy. If you feel your energy is already fully maximized, we may not have much to offer. But if you feel that you are not fully yourself, or that you have given your power away, then the One Love and Star of Light philosophy may resonate with you.
A Philosophy Rooted in Meaning
Our philosophy explores the meaning of life, where we came from, and the role that things like water, food, and life experiences play in shaping us. For example, we place spiritual items throughout our home to remind us of why we are here on Earth, to become whole and to guide our thoughts so we can create and grow.
Surrounding Yourself with What Matters
We have angel statues outside, Quan Yin statues in several rooms, and pictures of things we love placed throughout the house. These include photos of our children and moments when my wife and I shared joyful experiences. We surround ourselves with items that bring us happiness. Whenever I see those pictures, I think of the good times in life, and that is a big part of spirituality.
We also have a large Tibetan thangka hanging on the wall leading down to our lower level. It reminds us of Buddhist traditions and monks. It is about eight feet tall and makes the experience of walking between the levels of our home feel more meaningful. We decorate our walls with meaningful pictures, and we keep fresh flowers in many of our rooms, replacing them when needed.
Everyday Reminders That Keep You Connected
By surrounding yourself with things that help you remember what matters, you naturally become more spiritual. Jewelry, bracelets, or even tattoos can serve as reminders that help you move beyond the routine of simply waking up and going to work each day. At every meal, we say a blessing and thank God for the food. Just today, I pulled four large carrots from the garden for dinner.
Living from Sunrise to Sunset
Every morning at sunrise, we step outside barefoot on the grass to reconnect with Mother Earth and watch the sun rise. Some people say this practice aligns with our circadian rhythms. Perhaps that is true, but it also encourages us to live our lives from sunrise to sunset, much like farmers once did.
Nourishing the Body as a Spiritual Practice
Another important part of our routine is buying our weekly food from Good Earth. The store focuses on fresh, organic foods, so we can find everything we need for the week. We plan our meals to support our energy, green salads, orange and red beets, salmon, and other nourishing foods. It may cost a little more, but there is no refined sugar or unnecessary junk in the store.
We also take some supplements. In the mornings, I enjoy drinking hibiscus tea with beet root extract, which seems to help cleanse my kidneys. For breakfast, we often have sprouted cereals and walnuts, which help keep our minds sharp and alert. We usually buy several containers of blueberries each week, and of course a little dark chocolate with minimal sugar.
Small Sacrifices, Big Spiritual Returns
By buying healthy food and perhaps sacrificing one dinner out each week, we can afford these choices. Eating good-tasting food that nourishes your body is, in many ways, the essence of spirituality. You can meditate, breathe deeply, and practice other techniques, but surrounding yourself with things that produce positive energy goes a long way toward helping you stay spiritually connected.
