A bright morning beach scene with people in the ocean doing group exercise

Love and Peace – Spiritual Reflections on the Ocean and Smoothies

Morning Movement in the Ocean

It was 9:15 AM, and about a hundred of us gathered to learn ocean exercise from Charlotte. She handed each of us foam floaties, and we went through a warm-up routine before she announced it was time for the water. We splashed into the waves and swam out together, forming a circle around her for an hour of water aerobics. Coordinating hands and feet for the first time wasn’t easy, and after half an hour my shoulders were aching and the cold began to set in, so I headed back toward shore. Still, she certainly got our energy flowing. It was a true spiritual experience on a bright, sunny day. The water was 78 degrees—perfect, as long as you didn’t mind the waves lifting and lowering you as you moved.

A Peaceful Cooldown in Nature

Afterward, we cooled down with stretches in the warm sand, barefoot. A man blew a conch shell to signal the end of the session. He practiced Transcendental Meditation and looked wonderful for an 80-year-old—I half expected him to levitate. Nature was at her finest, and aligning our movement with the ocean and surroundings felt like our own definition of peace. When the exercises were over, everyone mingled and enjoyed each other’s company. That evening, many of us planned to meet again for a potluck dinner at sunset. Imagine doing this three times a week.

Smoothies, Friendships, and Flowing Energy

Turtles and seals rested on the beach with signs reminding people to keep a respectful distance. Four of us headed to Fish, a local smoothie shop, where we each ordered our favorites. I got a Blueberry Banzai with protein powder. We sipped our smoothies and talked about a healing retreat planned for the southwest desert in February. Mostly, we laughed, shared stories, and enjoyed the effortless sense of connection. Love really flowed among us, and everything felt natural and easy.

A Community Built on Wellness

At the end of the morning, we hugged and kissed each other goodbye, already looking forward to the next gathering. This lifestyle is such a contrast to how many people live, but here on Kauai, with people of all ages, it feels completely normal. The ocean is clean, the environment feels welcoming, and we choose to engage in activities that nourish us. Exercise and healthy eating in a beautiful setting—spiritual in their origin and beneficial in their practice. What would it take for more communities to do the same? Not much—just a group of like-minded people. In cooler states, people already gather for yoga classes, retreats, solstice and equinox ceremonies, or even sunrise and sunset gatherings.

Imagining a Healthier Culture

Imagine if everyone did some form of movement before work instead of rushing straight into a day of sitting at a desk. In Japan, they do this—and they live long, productive, focused lives. If workplaces in America fostered community, provided healthy food, and encouraged mindful activity, businesses would have clearer values, people would feel more connected, and perhaps we’d all rely less on stress-relief shortcuts like medication. I’m willing to bet people would simply be happier.

  1. Thank you can for sharing these special and spectacular insights and experiences. I was able to feel the excitement of hopping in the water and even the coolness you felt at this time of the year. Perhaps it’s because I was lucky enough to spend 7 years in Hawaii, but I think it’s because I energetically drop in with your words and actions. In the quantum, I added this experience to my body. A peacefulness embraced me, and I felt inspired to get out of my warm bed to go walk my dog and give us both that am movement we all need!
